BIOL2039 Fundamental Topics in Biology
Instructions for the Lab Report on Bitter Taste Perception

You should complete a lab report based on labs 2-5 of the Fundamental Topics in Biology course. The
overall aim of these labs was to characterise genotypic variation in the TAS2R38 gene amongst L2
Life Science students. There is more information within “A Guide to Scientific Writing” on within the
supporting your learning section on Moodle. Your lab report should comprise of the following
sections:
1. A title (5% of mark)
2. A brief introduction (200 words maximum) should include the purpose of experiments you carried
out and a bit of background to what is known about the topic. Remember to include hypotheses for
your two research questions:
 To determine whether there is a link between the PTC taster genotype and coffee
consumption
 To determine whether there is a link between the PTC taster genotype and an explanatory
variable of your choice
(15% of mark)
3. A methods section (150 words maximum) that ONLY includes a summary of how you carried out
the data analysis i.e. the statistics. You do not need to describe any of the methods you used in the
practical labs, e.g. PCR, etc. (15% of mark)

4. A results section should contain appropriate well annotated figures and tables with legends, from
the labs. The data for your lab group to analyse will be available in an excel spreadsheet and
accessed from this Moodle site after the relevant labs have been completed.
The results section should also contain a main text which summarises what was seen in each figure.
Subheadings may help organise the information here. Remember to include the results from
statistical analysis of the data. (300 words maximum). (15% of mark for figures should be concise,
15% for main results text)
5. A discussion section (300 words maximum). (30% of mark)
6. References
Remember to include a reference section – use the Harvard system of referencing.
