Instructions

Complete the questions which relate to the Natural Hazard that specifically affects the
Australian location you have been allocated.
Classes will be allocated ONE of the following locations which have a specific hazard. All
students in the class will complete the assignment on their assigned location.
Location 1 Montacute in South Australia – a BUSHFIRE PRONE AREA
Location 2 Exmouth in Western Australia – a CYCLONE PRONE AREA
Location 3 Pallarenda in North Queensland – a FLOOD PRONE AREA
Answer the following questions in report format.
1. Explain what is a Natural Disaster. (100 words)
2. Explain the causes of your allocated Natural Disaster type. (200 words)
3. Describe the history of Natural Disaster activity in your allocated location. Include the
social, environmental and economic impacts of these historical events in your
location. (400 words)
4. Design a house that is Natural Disaster Proof in your location. e.g. Exmouth in
Western Australia
 Your house should consider the topography of the area and surrounding
geographical features. You will need to use Google Earth to access this
information: https://www.google.com/earth/
 You must provide an original annotated (labelled) sketch of the house
showing the features that make it a Natural Disaster Proof building in relation
to your Natural Disaster type.
 Describe the features in your sketch and explain how they make the house
disaster proof. You may include between THREE (3) and FIVE (5) features.

5. Create a 60 second video.
Real Estate Agent Video: Pretend you are a Real Estate agent, explain the features
of your Natural Disaster Proof designed house to prospective vendors or investors.
The video must be submitted during class time on the 15th of October. It is
recommended to save this onto a USB or hard drive so it can be uploaded in class.
Students must present the video on the Interactive White Board to the class.
