The Theatre Experience

1) Curate a festival of performances we have looked at
Imagine you are to curate a mini theatre festival featuring 3 works we have studied in
‘The Theatre Experience’.
Conceptualise the overall theme for the festival, and present a curatorial rationale,
explaining both your choice of theme and your selection of works. You may wish to
give further consideration to who the audience will be for the festival, where it should
be held, and how it might be marketed. You could additionally explain how the
programming of a particular work draws out otherwise under-appreciated aspects of
its themes and/or form.
The above is the requirement of the speech.
My speech part is the beginning of the whole group.
I need you to write (1)a beginning for me. The
part I assigned is to(2) introduce the theme of
our performance festival and simple introduce three
performances we choose,I wrote it below, I need
you to change it into a native English
statement。(3)one of the performances (golden
Cangue) linked to our theme. You need to help write
a fluent complete script, linking the keywords I
mentioned below, some of which I did not write
carefully, such as historical, cultural background
context. You can fill it in by searching online.
The total adds up to no more than 5 minutes.

Theme: longing for love
Why:
Everyone desires to love and be love. Our longing for love is even stronger in modern
life that features loneliness, isolation and misunderstanding. Therefore, we want to
launch a theatre festival with the theme “longing for love” to explore the various
expressions of love and conflicts of love in theatre by presenting live performances of
Gypsy, The Golden Cangue and Kontakthof. As Wilson remarks on the functions of
theatre: “though not real in a literal sense, it can be completely – even painfully – real
in an emotional or intellectual sense,” we hope these performances can be a real
adventure to find our own definitions of love and the “best” way to love.

The Golden Cangue – imprisoned love
What is this performance about?
Golden Cangue is a modern Chinese opera, based on Eileen Chang’s novella about…
(简单介绍,可顺便介绍the golden cangue(Symbolic meaning) 的象征意义

 symbolizes the protagonist's destructive action, which metaphorically bears the
frame used to hold prisoners in ancient China;
 she is both imprisoned and being imprisoned.

Analysis:
Between Qiqiao and Jize:
 the conflict between:
Love in freedom (the ideal love that Qiqiao was longing for)
imprisoned love (the reality that she is imprisoned by her marriage and by rites)
 why the love is imprisoned? (imprisoned by what?)
联系historical and cultural context
e.g. As a woman with humble origins and low social status under the dominance of
patriarchy, she lacks freedom in love and marriage, suffering from an unhappy and
unfulfilled life. She is forced to marry family Chiang for wealth and is looked down
by her husband family members. She eventually falls in love with Jize and desires his
response but he keeps a distance with her because of the rites…

Between Qiqiao and her children:
 how she imprisons her children in the name of love?
Her son: 纵容他吸鸦片,离间他和他老婆
Her daughter:
Foot-binding
Manipulated and controled by her mother. Qiqiao persuades her daughter not to trust
any men, thus polluting her daughter's life and stealing her lifelong happiness.
 why imprison her children in the name of love?
联系historical and cultural context ( familial hierarchy: in traditional Chinese family
structure, a family was well balanced, observed strict filial piety and respected elders.
She thinks should have right to control her children lives), 以及Qiqiao的个人因素
(她自己爱情被拒绝被禁锢, 因此也怕她女儿受到这样的伤害)
