The task is to prepare a comprehensive Place Analysis using the template provided (see document
titled Place Analysis). You are then to propose a development which complements the place you
have chosen. You are to provide a justification for that development.
You are to choose an urban precinct in Sydney (could be a ‘town centre’, a ‘high street’, a ‘shopping
street’ or a cluster of businesses around a train station etc). The subject area is to include a cluster of
businesses and must include a public space. It may include residences and other land uses. The
subject area must be located on multiple parcels of land under different ownership (eg NOT an
enclosed shopping mall).
You should avoid newly developed precincts.
The assignment includes two parts
1) You are to prepare a detailed Place Analysis including written observations, a map or plan of
the area and photos. This is to be presented in A3 poster form and include tables or charts
as well as plans and photos. Max 2 pages single side.
2) You are to propose a new land development on one site in your precinct. The development
must reflect the opportunities and constraints identified in your Place Analysis. The
development is to be permissible under the Zoning controls of the site. You are to provide a
written justification of why you have chosen the particular development. Your development
must reflect the highest and best opportunity AND it is to provide some form of public
benefit….. you must contribute to the local community. Max two pages A4, single side
You will need to read the four documents provided , visit the site and conduct online research about
any plans and strategies in place for the precinct (see the local Council web site etc). You need to
demonstrate an understanding of existing planning and strategic controls for the precinct as well as
demonstrate an understanding of the key characteristics of the precinct.
All analysis and descriptions must be original work. Copying from published material will not be
