Artificial Intelligence in Business Process Improvement

Artificial Intelligence

The current years have seen several successful applications of Artificial Intelligence (IA) technology in business operations. Artificial Intelligence has attracted the attention of managers and chief executive officers not only research scientists and technologists. Artificial Intelligence is defined as the information systems and applications that have the ability to sense, understand, and act (Koehler, 2018). This is a computer enabled system that perceives the work and collects data, analyze and comprehend the collected data, and make informed decisions from the data analyzed and offer independent guidance based on the analysis made. Additionally, Artificial Intelligence can learn from experience and change their processing and behavior based on the learning gained (Koehler, 2018). Alpaydin (2014) on the other hand described Artificial Intelligence as a technological system that allows machines to learn from experience, adjust to new inputs, and perform tasks that are performed by humans. Some of the AI examples include; self- driving cars and chess- playing computers that depend heavily on natural learning and deep learning processing.

Business Process Improvement

Business process improvement means changing the state of a business to become faster, more flexible, cheaper, or to achieve higher quality (Ayad, 2010). Aydinil, Brinkkemper and Ravesteyn (2009) gave a more detailed definition of business process improvement by asserting that it is achieved by altering the state of business process elements making the state after the change better than before the change in terms of accomplishing the organizational goals and hence improving the performance of the business process.

Requirements
You are required to write a brief essay of 800-1200 words. The broad topic of this essay is “Artificial
Intelligence in Business Process Improvement”. This is an individual assessment item – group work
or any collaboration on the written component is not permitted. You can and should discuss the
assignment at a high level with your peers, but the work needs to be your own.
Informally, business processes are the ‘things the organisation does’. These organisational activities
are what create business value for the organisation. The way in which the organisation carries out
these activities are critical to the business’s success. A business that is inefficient and/or ineffective
in comparison to its competitors will likely not survive in the market. Organisations therefore seek
ongoing improvement in their business processes. A key contemporary issue is the use of artificial
intelligence (AI) to improve these business processes.
With this in mind, you are required to research and write an individual essay that describes and
defines AI and business process improvement (BPI), and analyses the role of AI in BPI activities.
The essay should then discuss several implications of the use of AI in BPI for contemporary
organisations. Finally, the essay should set out your own personal reflection upon the implications
of the use of AI to improve business processes for your career.
In your essay:
• Define and describe AI.
• Define and describe BPI in organisations.
• Analyse the role of AI in BPI activities.
• Evaluate at least two implications for contemporary organisations using AI to improve
business processes.
• Reflect upon the potential for business process automation to affect your possible future
career, and what you might need to do as a consequence.

The essay should have an abstract, an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. The introduction
should be short and identify the purpose, scope, and structure of the essay. The conclusion should
be short and summarize the points you have made in your essay and what is interesting about them.
You are to refer to external, independent, academic sources (for example, peer-reviewed journal
articles) to support your observations. These sources are to be cited using one of the approved
referencing styles. Artificial Intelligence in Business Process Improvement.
Given its reflective nature, you may choose to write this essay in the first person.
Guidelines
Expectations
Please read the following expectations carefully.
Word limit: 1000 words +/- 20 % (= 800-1200 words)

If you stay under or go over the word limit, you can ONLY get 8/20 marks
as set out on the last row in the marking rubric (see below regarding what
is included in the Word Count).

Weighting: 20%
Due Date: Submit by 2:00pm on 22nd August 2019.
Scope: There are five main aspects of your essay: Introduction, Background, AI in
BPI, Implications for Organisations and My Career, and Conclusion.
You may use headings in your essay to clearly identify each aspect, or you
may use a well-structured essay that is coherent and has paragraphs that link
to each other.
Your headings, if used, do not need to be exactly as set out above.
Abstract: An abstract is a brief summary of the overall essay, and a reader uses an
abstract to quickly ascertain the purpose of the paper. The abstract should
cover the whole paper and should set out the purpose of the paper, what you
did, and the conclusion.
An abstract is different to the introduction in that an introduction provides
the rationale for the paper and is a forward-looking statement as to what you
intend to achieve in the paper. In contrast, the abstract reports what was
achieved. Its key goal is to help the reader assess whether they wish to read
the essay. Note that an introduction supports its statements with citations
whereas an abstract does not.
An abstract also differs from an executive summary in that an executive
summary is intended to communicate the key points of a document. An
executive summary is usually used for a report rather than an essay. The key
goal for an executive summary is that the executive can read the executive
summary and act on it without reading the whole report. The report is provided
for detail if the executive audience requires it.

Introduction: In your opening introduction, briefly introduce the topic, the purpose and
motivation for your essay, and provide ‘signposting’ for the remainder of the
essay.
Definitions and other statements should be supported with citations from the
current academic literature, not a webpage. Artificial Intelligence in Business Process Improvement.

Background: Define and describe AI and BPI. Discuss why these two concepts are

important, related, topics.
Support your definition, description, and discussion with citations from the
current Information Systems academic literature and examples from either
academic literature or industry publications.

AI in BPI You should then analyse the role of AI in BPI activities. That is, how can an

organisation use AI to improve business processes?
You will likely need to use a taxonomy that describes different BPI activities
and consider the different ways AI can be used by an organisation.
Support your definition, description, and discussion with citations from the
current Information Systems academic literature and examples from
industry publications.

Implications for
Organisations
and My Career

Implications for Organisations
Considering contemporary organisations, identify and evaluate at least two
implications arising from the use of AI in BPI. That is, identify two ways in
which the use of AI in BPI affects organisations and evaluate each implication.
The best essays will consider strategic implications rather than transactional
implications and will evaluate these implications according to defined criteria
(for example, you might evaluate the implications according to a SWOT –
Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities or threats – analysis).
Support your discussion with relevant citations from current academic
literature. You should use examples from academic literature or industry
publications to support your discussion.
Implications for My Career
You should then identify your current preferred career (e.g. accounting,
information systems, finance, marketing, human resources, etc), and reflect
upon how the use of AI to improve business processes might affect your future
career path. Discuss several implications for your career and identify
several actions you should take as a result.
Support your discussion with relevant citations from the current academic or
industry publications.

Conclusion: In the conclusion to your essay, summarise the insights you identified in the
essay and highlight the most important and interesting conclusions you made.
References: • In your essay be sure to cite a range of different sources from the academic
literature that are quality sources identified from your own independent
research activities and that are relevant to your essay.
• Use the approved referencing styles APA 6th, Vancouver style, or Harvard
Referencing to cite your sources. The UQ Library provides “How To”
guides for writing that you can use. Artificial Intelligence in Business Process Improvement.
• Quality: Given the cross-disciplinary nature of this topic, your essay
should cite a minimum of 8 academic papers from journals ranked B, A or
A* at the Australian Business Deans Council List (see
http://www.abdc.edu.au/master-journal-list.php) that you have found
through your own independent research. Sources provided in the
electronic course profile do not count as a source identified from your
own research activity. Refer to the ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ for more
information regarding independent research.
• Relevant: The cited source must clearly support the points made.
• You may also cite industry publications (e.g. InTheBlack from CPA
Australia) but these are in addition to the 8 academic papers needed.
• As a guide, it is likely that you will need to cite at most 16 papers in your
essay (including both academic literature and industry publications).
• For conference papers, see http://aisnet.org/page/Conferences
• Be sure to include quotation marks when quoting statements directly from
another author; also include the page or line number for any direct quotes as
required by the referencing style.
