CONSUMER CULTURE, TECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Why Do So Many Overlook The Problems Associated With Everyday Consumption?

Crocker (2017) suggested that the mental game of consumerism has a similar distracting and blinding effect. In this case, individuals like comparing what they like or dislike, what they have and what other have, and imagining what they might just need; drive the need for consumption. One of the areas where individuals overlook the problems associated with the everyday consumption is consumption of junk food by the adults. Consumption of junk food among the adults has become so absorbing and apparently urgent to the extent that it has become so difficult to think outside the consumption idea and the problems that would arise following everyday consumption.

An article by Sapkota and Neupane (2017) on the consumption of junk food by secondary level students in Chitwan is a good example of how so many overlook the problems associated with everyday consumption. The study was based on the assumption that junk food contributes to overweight and obesity among the adults but the adults overlook this problem when consuming junk foods. The study indicated that 82.3% of the obese children are non- vegetarians while there are only 8.8% of the vegetarians and ova vegetarians who are obese.
