A critical reflection is an important part of any student’s work. It entails looking back at
an exercise that was completed, and analysing the process, including how it was done, what was
done right, what was done wrong, and how it can be improved in future. In this reflection, I
analysed how we carried out the exercise for week 9-11, looking at the theories that we based on
exercise on, my contribution, and how I can do things differently given the chance to repeat the
same exercise.

Critique of Theoretical and Practical Elements of the Response
In weeks 9-11, we were assigned to a case of Young4Eva Cosmetica. Responding to
public relations issues of the case, we carried out different exercises. In week 9, we did a
stakeholder analysis of the case and identified 10 key stakeholders. Then we wrote a letter to
convince the board of directors why they need to hire a PR firm to assist the company in
improving its image.

Reflective essay

Students will write an individual critical reflective essay of 1500 words based on their scenario response work undertaken in groups from across weeks 9 to 11. The essay should offer a theory-rich reflection on the student’s own experiences and newly acquired insights and understanding of public relations practice, particularly as it relates to ethics. The essay should offer:

  1. A critique of the theoretical and practical elements and concepts employed in the team’s response to the ethical scenario. Consider these questions in devising your essay: What theories did the team draw upon in devising its strategies and responses to the scenarios? Were they useful? Why or why not? What strategies do you think were successful and why? How did you make certain ethical decisions and why? With hindsight, would you have done things differently and in what way? Academic sources will be required to support your discussion. This should not be a superficial ‘road map’ or ‘notes’ of what transpired but an insightful, critical reflection into the thinking behind your decisions, also making the important links to theory and principles in ethical PR practice.   2. A reflection on your experiences and the validity of these experiences to your overall understanding of public relations professional practice. For example, what did you learn about teamwork? What did you learn about devising an ethical approach in your scenario responses and dealing with different stakeholder groups? What are some of the skills you could bring to an employer?.   3. In a separate section after your conclusion, detail your own contribution to the team’s response and management of the crisis scenario.
