Emerging Disruptive Technologies In The Retail Industry

Introduction

Almost every industry is affected by the introduction go disruptive technologies particularly in production of goods and services, operations, and delivery of goods and services in the market. This report demonstrates an understanding and ability to analyse the effects of emerging disruptive technologies and trends in the retail industry by focusing on the case of Wal-Mart Supermarket chain in the United States of America. Therefore, this report identifies and critically analyses emerging disruptive technologies in the retail industry and develops a case on how Wal-Mart can undertake strategic change to address emerging disruptive technologies.

Background

Innovations have two purposes; disrupting the market for competing goods and services or others sustaining the competitive position of the existing companies. An unexpected disruption usually occurs when the existing companies are not prepared for the erosion of their markets by an innovation that was initially considered as inferior in terms performance especially in meeting customer needs (Hang, Garnsey & Ruan, 2015). Companies, regardless their size and sectors face a number of new technologies which disrupt or generate business opportunities and challenges (Schiavi & Behr, 2018). As a result, companies mainly focus on disruptive technologies as a way of providing the steady supply of new services, processes, and products thus influencing market and business structures.

Assessment types used in this module
Formative Assessment
Formative assessments and activities are opportunities for you to apply, practice and make
sense of the learning materials and content that you have worked with. These will mainly be
located in the End of Unit Activities.
We have written these to help you to (for example) practice some academic or professional
skills, such as referencing, literature searching and analysing materials. You can choose
how much time and effort you put into these activities.
These may take the form of individual tasks, such as: reading some text, or watching a video
and documenting your reaction to it; responding to some discussion points on the discussion
forum; considering a case study; or, participating in a live online classroom session.
The main aim of formative activities is for you to receive feedback on your contribution,
performance, or progress that will help you prepare for and complete your final summative
module assessment.
All modules you take will vary in several ways, and the type of feedback you get for each
formative assessment or activities will vary too. If your tutors give you marks as part of the
feedback, these will not be counted in your final module grade.
Summative Assessment
Summative assessments are the pieces of coursework that you must complete which
contribute towards your final grade in this module. If you have a Support Plan you can discuss
with your module tutor what reasonable adjustments you need.
Summative assessment in this particular module is: CW1 – a collaborative activity, CW2 – an
individual report (a business case).
You will be expected to submit your summative assessments via Turnitin assessment points
on the Assessment page in My Learning section of the module, and a thread on the Discussion
board that will be set up specifically for the collaborative activity. Emerging Disruptive Technologies In The Retail Industry.
You should take the feedback that you receive from the completion of summative assessments
in this module and use it to help you improve your performance in future assessments.

Business operations (Business case): Present a business case for the company to
undertake strategic changes, which will be required for the business to survive and succeed
in its market (or in new markets). This can be done by comparing, contrasting and analysing
possible approaches to the associated challenges and suggesting a strategy for business
operations (using models and concepts found in the course and via wider reading) to
respond to the changes in the market (from Affected Market section) and enhance the
customer experience throughout their journey. Explore the implementation approaches
linked with the strategy.
Conclusions: Summarise the findings and suggest any areas for future work (e.g., further
potential for other emerging technologies that will affect the industry you have been writing
about). Emerging Disruptive Technologies In The Retail Industry.
References: A properly formatted set of references for all sources cited in the report
Please note that citing sources of concepts/theories/models and use of the academic
literature, as well as industry data and research are essential. Emerging Disruptive Technologies In The Retail Industry.
