Evidence-Based Intervention That Can Be Used With Children Or Adolescents Who Have A Substance Use Disorder
Introduction to the Intervention
Substance use and abuse has continued to be an important public health problem that contributes significantly to high mortality and morbidity rates throughout the United States. There is a large body of research that focuses on understanding the epidemiology and etiology of substance use and abuse in the country. The knowledge gained in this research has been important in developing evidence based interventions that can be used with children or adolescents with a substance use disorder. Project Towards No Drug Abuse (TND) is a program for high school students designed to help high risk students aged between 14 and 19 years to resist substance use and abuse (Carney & Myers, 2012). The program has twelve lessons each one going for 40 to 50 minutes that focus on social skill training, motivational activities and decision- making components. Project Towards No Drug Abuse is delivered through games, student worksheets, group discussions, videos, and role-playing exercises. TND program addresses three key risk factors for alcohol, tobacco and other drug use (Gorman, 2014). These factors include motivation factors like attitudes, expectations, and beliefs about substance use; self-control, social, and coping skills; and decision making skills particularly on how to make decisions that promote health behaviors (Griffin & Botvin, 2010).
