Groups are geared towards actions in achieving the set goals and objectives. Since the group includes strangers who come together, they need facilitation and leadership to work together towards the shared vision. Facilitation is, therefore, an important undertaking in every group regardless of its goals and objectives (Brabender, Fallon, & Smolar, 2004). Whether a small or a large group, there must be someone who shape and guide the process of the group workings and who acts as an overseer of what the group is doing.

Facilitating

There are three basic principle of group facilitation. First, the facilitator acts as the guide that helps the group to move through the entire process together. This means the facilitator is not an opinion giver but draws from the opinions of group members and their ideas to steer the group. Second, facilitation focuses on how the group members participate in learning and planning, not just what is achieved by the group (Brabender et al., 2004). Lastly, a facilitator should remain neutral without taking sides. For the part of the facilitator, always start the meeting on time, welcome everyone, make introductions, review agenda and objective of the group, spell out the ground rules, encourage participation, always stick to the agenda, avoid individualized and detailed decision making, seek commitments, respecting everyone’s rights, being flexible, summarizing the meeting results, thanking all the participants, and closing the meeting are important facilitation skills that each facilitator should cultivate (Community Tool Box).
