Global Citizens: Citizenship, Justice and Civil Society

Week Two: Models of citizenship- forms of inclusion

Citizenship studies have continued to attract different scholars in efforts to provide a coherent explanation of what it really means by being a citizen.  Indeed, a handful of scholars have attempted an explanation on the boundary between citizenship and nationality. While there may be perceptions as the two being the same, citizenship arguably carries a deeper meaning in relation to politics, social-cultural, and economic connotations. For example, Baubock in his study Citizen Constellations (2010) suggests that citizenship studies should adopt a transnational dimension where citizens are linked to more than one political entity simultaneously so that the duties and rights of such citizens are determined by different political entities/authorities. Based on the suggested transnational perspective in migration studies, emphasis is on the application of a triangular analytical model that incorporates diverse views on citizenship; this model includes the individual’s country of origin, country of immigration, and as political actors.
