Environmental Ethic Dilemma

In their line of work, managers are faced by ethical dilemmas where they are required to make a decision that balances the conflicting interests of stakeholders. Environmental stewardship is one of the issues where managers have to make a decisions that balances the interest of different stakeholders (Whittier, Dewett, and Williams, 2006; Zeni et al., 2016). Balancing between organisational growth and environmental interest requires managers to make the most ethical resolve through ethical decision making models, including, moral rights, practical, utilitarianism, and social justice (Status.net). This paper argues that the manager should concede to the environment demand of the investor in line with utilitarianism ethical decision making model.

1. Essay Plan (10%):
l You must choose topic 1 or 2 (below)
l The word count is 450 words ±10% or ±45 words. The word count excludes the reference list but
includes your in-text citations. Marks will be deducted if students do not follow the word count

Your essay plan must consist of paragraphs of the following:
Introduction (about 100 words)
1. Make a general statement about the topic
2. Identify the ethical dilemma (for topic 1) or clearly indicate which company is successful and which
company is unsuccessful (for topic 2)
3. State the position you will argue for—your thesis statement
4. Mention the points you will cover in the scope of your essay
Body – developing your argument (about 250 words)
1. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence
2. Develop each main idea by making e.g. comparisons and contrasts, using referenced explanations,
examples, definitions etc.
3. Conclude by summarising or linking to the idea being discussed in the next paragraph

Pick one of the 2 topics:
Topic 1
Managers are often faced with the need to make ethical decisions, affecting their organisations and
both internal and external stakeholders. Assume you are a top manager of one of the largest oil
and gas companies in Australia. Your company is also a major shareholder of a global coal mining
company. You have just been approached by some major investors who are concerned about the
adverse effects of climate change. These investors have requested that you immediately implement
strategies to contribute to global efforts such as the Paris Agreement to slow down climate change.
The investors want you to commit to a 2 percent carbon dioxide reduction in the first year and 5
percent per year for the following two years. However, accepting this request would involve
substantial costs that would negatively impact your company’s financial position. In this unit we have
discussed the four ethical decision making rules. Please discuss all four ethical decision making
rules. Choose one of the four ethical decision making rules to explain your decision on whether or
not to agree to the request from the major investors.
OR

Topic 2
Pick one successful and one unsuccessful organisation you are familiar with. Compare and contrast how top
managers at these two organisations effectively and ineffectively utilised Fayol’s four functions in their firms.
Hint: Please pick organisations that are well known. Please check your organisation with your tutor. Your tutor
needs to be aware of your chosen organisation as your tutor is marking your paper. Please consult your tutor by
week two (week beginning 4 March 2019).
You are required to consult and fully reference at least THREE (3) different articles from Peer

Reviewed Scholarly Journals.

Marks will be deducted if you do not provide three (3) different articles from Peer Reviewed

Scholarly Journals.

You must use the Chicago version 17 referencing system to acknowledge your sources of information

(both in text and in the reference list at the end).

You must submit your paper in a Word document format (no pdf or notes format please).

The use of WIKIPEDIA online encyclopaedia is not allowed.
The use of Peer Reviewed Scholarly Journals is required.

Online academic databases accessed through the library website such as Proquest DO NOT count as

(www) internet references.

Your assignment will not be marked if it is not submitted through Turnitin. You have been

allocated only

one Turnitin submission per assignment, so only a final version should be submitted and not a

draft version.

Any submission of a draft version will be treated as your final submission. You cannot submit your
work more than once to Turnitin. If you are concerned with your similarity result of your Turnitin

submission, take steps to correct the offending paragraphs.

2. Written Assignment – final essay submission (30%)
l Topic 1 or 2
l Word count is 1,500 words ±10% or 150 words. The word count excludes the reference list but
includes your in-text citations. Marks will be deducted if students do not follow the word count
guideline.
l Please note your tutor’s comments on your earlier 450 word essay plan. Your tutor will mark your
final submission after reviewing your marked essay plan. To score a good mark in your final essay
submission, please act on the various suggestions/comments made by your tutor in your essay plan.
Marks will be deducted if students ignore their tutor’s comments.
To achieve a passing grade you must satisfy the following:
l Information literacy skills – Gather, critically assess and use information to build an argument. You
need to state your arguement and critically analyse the statement.
l Referencing – You must use in-text referencing and include a reference list. You must use the
Chicago 17 referencing guide, available from the library website.
Your essay must:
l contain an introduction, thesis statement, main contents section and a conclusion.
l be concise, clear and well edited. Your essay must conform to the structure discussed in the
Communication Skills Centre High Flyer number 7.
l be fully referenced; at least EIGHT different sources of information (e.g. book, edited book, www,
journal article from the full-text databases, current affairs magazine, newspaper). WWW references
can contribute to a maximum of ONE-THIRD of the total number of reference sources utilised. The
use of Peer-Reviewed Scholarly Journals is required. Online academic databases accessed through the
library website such as Proquest DO NOT count as (www) internet references.
l The use of Wikipedia is NOT ALLOWED.

3. Case study assignment (20%) – GROUP 800 word summary AND 8 minute presentation
800 word summary to be submitted through Turnitin by the due date and time.
You may pick one of the topics:
Topic 1
Pick an organisation from the list that your tutors will provide you with. Describe one of
the main forces in the task environment affecting this organisation. Provide an analysis
of how this factor impacts your organisation’s competitive advantage.
Or
Topic 2
Pick an organisation from the list that your tutors will provide you with. Describe one of
the main forces in the general environment affecting this organisation. Provide an analysis
of how this factor impacts your organisation’s competitive advantage.

therefore you are required to consult and fully reference at least six different sources of information (Any
combination of books, edited books, www, journal articles from the full-text databases, current affairs
magazines, newspapers etc). WWW references can contribute to a maximum of ONE-THIRD of the total
