Introduction

Fresh Catering is an Australian catering company established in 1999 based in Sydney. It is
currently facing a Business Issue: due to an incident where several front-of-house waiting staff quit
and forwarded their letters of resignation in a close timeframe, it has come into the company’s
Human Resources department’s attention that Fresh Catering has a higher than average turnover
rate of 75% compared to the average industry turnover rate of 70% in 2016 (National Restaurant
Association 2017). To get to the bottom of this issue, this proposal for primary research is composed
to be conducted in and by Fresh Catering.
To start tackling with the issue, Fresh Catering has conducted an initial report on the incident
that had most recently caused the leaving of staff, as well as looking through past records to identify
that the turnover rate has indeed risen in recent time. A literature review on secondary data and a set
of questions was also devised with objective to attempt to figure out why the staff of Fresh Catering
are leaving the company, and to finding out possible immediate remedies and control methods for
long term developments.

Instructions Students are to form groups of 2 Students to complete the Assessment Task. All Students in

the group will receive equal marks for the assessment.
The presentation recommended for this Assessment is REPORT FORMAT.
An Executive Summary is NOT required. Although, Students should include a Title Page, a
Table of Contents, and use suitable Headings for the information presented.
Student Identifiers (Name and Number) of all Group Members and a page number should appear
on each page of the document – ideally in either the Header or Footer.
All assessments are expected to be submitted in a form and format that would be acceptable in the business
world. Therefore:
All Assessments are to be submitted using the Subject Learning Portal.
Handwritten and/or electronic submissions sent directly to the Lecturer will not be accepted;
All work must be word-processed, spell checked, grammatically acceptable, and professional in

The use any combination of narrative, point form, diagrams, graphs or charts including presenting the
information in table form is permitted – particularly if these devices reduce the wordiness and increase the
“readability” of the submission. Students should pay particular attention to the inclusion of relevant visuals to

Should not be written from a 1st person context, but rather from the 3rd person perspective. That is, “I, we,
my, our” are not acceptable;
All claims and recommendations are to be supported by suitable and relevant research and/or theoretical
principles; and include a correctly constructed Reference List and accompanying in report citations as per
College guidelines (Harvard Referencing).
Overall Marks will be awarded for:
The variety of appropriate Data Sources accessed to support recommend Methodology;
The depth of understanding of Research Methods and their applications provided in the proposal
The relevance of the recommended Research Methodology; and
The validity and potential usefulness of the proposal presented.

ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW AND REQUIREMENTS:
The aim of this Assessment is for Students to demonstrate both their understanding of and ability to formulate
and plan a suitable Research Project. MGT303A Business Information Analysis Assessment 3.
This Assessment requires Students to develop a Research Proposal in response to a Business Related
Problem which has already been established and initially investigated in Assessment 2: Literature Review and
designed to specifically address the outstanding Information requirements identified.
A Research Proposal can be defined as:
“A plan that offers recommendations for conducting research …details the who, the what, the where, the when
and the how of research and the information associated with it”.
At a minimum the Proposal should detail:
1. An INTRODUCTION outlining the key points of the Study established and progressed in Assessment 2:
Literature Review. (HINT: best to approach this section as though the reader is unaware of the preceding
Report and/or construct an Executive Summary of Assessment 2.)
The purpose of this Introduction is to set the scene for the Proposal by highlight what Objectives were met
by conducting the Literature Review and describing and defining the information that is to be collected in
this Research Proposal (that is at least one of the Information Gaps identified).
2. The (revised) RESEARCH OBJECTIVES, which are directly linked to the “Information Gaps” identified in
the Assessment Section of Assessment 2.
3. The RESEARCH APPROACH TO APPLIED
a. A description of the overall methodology to be used that is, whether the Proposed Study should
be Exploratory, Descriptive or Causal. MGT303A Business Information Analysis Assessment 3.
b. This section should also provide reasons as to why the recommended Approach suits the
problem/information requirements at this stage in the project and will how using the recommended
Approach will yield superior information/results.

4. DETAILS OF THE RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY TO BE APPLIED;
a. THE SPECIFIC RESEARCH TECHNIQUE RECOMMENDED: For example, Focus Groups,
Interviews, Surveys, Experiments or Observation. Including a justification as to why this technique
would be the most appropriate. This may include support from additional information on the
Population behaviour and/or be aligned with the overall Research Approach to be adopted
b. THE POPULATION(S) that will be the focus of interest is to be operationally defined including a

c. THE SAMPLING DESIGN TO BE USED: including where (the Sampling Frame) and how the
Sample will be obtained (Sampling Technique), estimates of sample size etc. Including a
justification as to why this technique would be appropriate and aligned with the overall Research

d. IMPLEMENTATION PLAN: Details on how (and why) the Research Design will be administered.

e. SUGGESTED QUESTIONS/TOPICS TO BE INVESTIGATED – For example if the mechanism
recommended is a Survey, then sample questions to be asked should be provided (ideally in a
questionnaire format), or if the recommended technique is focus groups, then an abridged
Discussion Guide. These should also be accompanied by an explanation on how the anticipated
responses will meet the Research Objectives developed and assist in the Decision Making

5. INCLUDE A PROJECT SCHEDULE. List each of the steps that will be undertaken and the time allocated
for each in the execution of the research.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
SUITABLE JUSTIFICATION (including reference to relevant Theoretical Principles, information
requirements/characteristics and/or population behavioural characteristics) is required for each of the
RECOMMENDATIONS made in the Proposal as to establish why they are deemed appropriate and will yield

THE PRESENTATION, FORMAT AND STRUCTURE OF THE REPORT FORMS PART OF THE
ASSESSMENT. Therefore it is recommended that student investigate and research the most appropriate
format for a Research Proposal Document
