MGTS3301 Assignment 2 – Evaluating UQ’s Strategy
You are employed as a management consultant by Middleton Consulting Group, which has been approached by the senior leadership team of The University of Queensland to provide an evaluation of the UQ Strategic Plan 2018-2021 and its implementation. You have been assigned to perform the tasks outlined below. The written evaluations you produce for each task should be presented as a single report. Detailed information about the presentation requirements for this report is included after the descriptions of the various tasks. MGTS3301 Assignment 2 – Evaluating UQ’s Strategy.
TASK 1: Evaluation of UQ’s Strategy Fit
The senior leadership team of UQ have requested that you conduct an evaluation of how well the UQ Strategic Plan 2018-2021 fits with the university’s external and internal environment. To conduct your evaluation, you will need to:
- analyse UQ’s external and internal environment using relevant strategy tools and concepts learned in this course;
- choose one Long-Term Objective AND one Medium-Term Strategic Focus Area from the UQ Strategic Plan 2018-2021 (see page 11 of the UQ Strategic Plan for a summary);
- evaluate how well your chosen long-term objective and medium-term strategic focus area fits with your analysis of UQ’s external and internal environment. For example, you might consider the extent to which your chosen long-term objective and medium-term strategic focus area:
o take advantage of opportunities and minimise threats in the general environment;
o align with the forces and attractiveness in your industry analysis;
o position UQ against competitors in your competitor analysis; and
o bundle resources to create core competencies and sources of competitive advantage in your VRIN analysis
- write up your evaluation of strategic fit in a concise 600 word summary. Your written evaluation must be supported by appendices that apply relevant strategy tools and concepts.
TASK 2: Evaluation of UQ’s Strategy Implementation
The senior leadership team of UQ have requested that you conduct an evaluation of the university’s implementation of your chosen long-term objective and medium-term strategic focus area. To conduct your evaluation, you will need to:
- choose ONE of the following elements of strategy implementation: (1) Organisational Structure; (2) Control Mechanisms; or (3) Strategic Leadership;
- evaluate the issues that UQ needs to consider when implementing strategy (as expressed in your chosen long-term objective and medium-term strategic focus area) using structure, control mechanisms or strategic leadership. More specifically, consider the following in your evaluation of strategy implementation:
o If you choose to focus on the element of organisational structure, you should evaluate how UQ’s organisational structure (as represented in UQ’s Organisational Structure Chart) might constrain and/or support UQ’s ability to implement its strategy.
o If you choose to focus on the element of control mechanisms, you should evaluate how effectively UQ’s measures of success (as listed on page 10 of the UQ Strategic Plan 2018-2021) will allow UQ to monitor its progress in implementing the strategy and make appropriate and timely adjustments.
o If you choose to focus on the element of strategic leadership, you should evaluate how well the aspects of strategic leadership (as taught in Week 10) are helping UQ to implement its strategy; and
- write up your evaluation of strategy implementation in a concise 600 word summary.
TASK 3: Evaluation of UQ’s Student Strategic Initiatives
The senior leadership team of UQ have requested that you conduct an evaluation of the strategic initiatives that the university has implemented to achieve its long-term objective of game-changing graduates. To conduct your evaluation, you will need to:
- choose one Strategic Initiative from the UQ Student Strategy document (see Appendix 1 – page 1);
- consider the two measures that UQ is using to gauge the overall success of its strategy with students (see Appendix 1 – page 2);
- evaluate your chosen Strategic Initiative against the two measures of success; and
- write up your evaluation of the student strategic initiative in a concise 600 word summary.
TASK 4: Recommendation
Finally, the senior leadership team of UQ have asked you to conclude your report with ONE key recommendation based on your evaluations. Your recommendation needs to be specific and flow from your preceding evaluations. MGTS3301 Assignment 2 – Evaluating UQ’s Strategy.
