The Chinese Government Can Fix its Regional Inequality Problem

Abstract
China is one of the most developed countries in the world. However, like many countries in the
world, she is still plagued by regional inequality that could negatively affect the social and
political stability of the country. Provinces located in the coastal region of China are more
developed than their inland counterparts. Hence, in a bid to solve this problem, the Chinese
government has initiated several strategies such as the development of Special Economic Zones
(SEZs) and the One Belt One Road (OBOR) strategy. With these strategies implemented, the
government has succeeded in devolving development to the rural areas of China, but there is still
more to be done in attaining equality of all her provinces.
Key words: regional inequality, OBOR, SEZs

1.     1.China’s rapid urbanisation has been perceived as the country’s new growth engine, and indeed, it has significantly promoted China’s economic and urban development in the past decades. Such a fast pace of urbanisation has substantial spatial requirements, for example, massively expanded urban scale; largely acquired suburban and rural lands; and demolished old urban housing. China’s land-centred development and the pursuit of land revenue is argued to be the most powerful drive for urbanisation. As such, critically discuss the following statement: “China is able to achieve a sustainable and ‘people-oriented’ urbanization and fix its land-revenue driven urbanisation problem”. The Chinese Government Can Fix its Regional Inequality Problem.

2. China has encountered serious inequality in regional development between its inland and coastal areas, as well as between its rural and urban areas. Imbalanced regional economic growth and enlarged differences in living standards are key indicators of this issue. In order to fix the regional inequality problem and realise the promised trickle-down effect of Deng Xiaoping’s coast-led-development-strategy, several strategies, including the recent One Belt, One Road strategy, have been implemented. Write a research essay to critically discuss the following statement: “The Chinese government can fix its regional inequality problem” The Chinese Government Can Fix its Regional Inequality Problem.
