The Importance of Collaborating and Teamwork for First Year’s Learners

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background
In modern society, the number of people who have the chance to get higher education is increasing
rapidly. However, for university students, there are still many challenges they need to overcome in the
course of their studies. The major challenge most students face, especially international students, is getting
accustomed to the new school environment because it comes with new methods of teaching and learning
different from lower institutions of learning. The first year in high learning institution is important because it
lays ground for future success. Although students need to develop there many skills that in their first year of
study, collaboration and teamwork is the most important skills because college learning is not all about the
individual but others as well. To achieve their mandate of producing all-round competent graduates,
institutions of higher learning must ensure that students develop collaboration and teamwork skills in the
course of their study. According to Ruhleder and Michael (2000), learning through collaboration not only
helps student improve in their areas of weakness, but it also helps them achieve greater psychological health,
acquire social competences, and have higher task achievement.

QCD110 Research Report

"Reports are used to help make decisions or account for actions. Reports use research to
make recommendations for action" (QUT cite/write, 2017, para. 2).
Society acknowledges that education can greatly improve the quality of life for both
communities and individuals. This knowledge allows people to see the world through new
eyes which opens up previously unknown possibilities. Seeking higher education can
develop this insight and reveal potential opportunities for future success. The 21st century
has brought about an increase in the number of students seeking higher education
opportunities in Australia. Enrolment in Australian universities has progressively increased
each year with the quality and variety of education on offer gaining global recognition.
In order to adjust to life at an Australian university, international students need to enhance
their efficiency and effectiveness in studying in order to be academically successful. While
this endeavour encompasses both social and educational activities, academic challenges can
prove to be even more demanding. Therefore, students enrolled in first year faculty require
increased proficiency in skills and knowledge to be able to meet the demanding academic
challenges in their navigation toward academic success. The Importance of Collaborating and Teamwork for First Year’s Learners.
QUTIC management has contracted you to investigate a skill which undergraduate students
require to be successful in their first year at university. Your analysis requires you, as the
researcher, to argue why your selected skill is the most important for first year
undergraduate students. As part of your investigation the client, Mr Ken Beutel, Director
QUTIC, requires recommendations which will identify how this skill should be delivered to
first year university students. The Importance of Collaborating and Teamwork for First Year’s Learners.
Select one of the following skills that you believe is the most important to assist students
succeed in first year faculty study:
 Independent learning
 Interpersonal communication
 Collaboration and teamwork
 Academic thinking
Your objective is to:
1. research your targeted skill, narrowing and analysing 4 subtopics.
2. justify your analysis using secondary research (2.0 Discussion).
3. argue why one aspect of each subtopic is more important for first year
undergraduate students (3.0 Conclusions).
4. identify recommendations for the client (4.0 Recommendations). The Importance of Collaborating and Teamwork for First Year’s Learners.
