The Role of a High School Nurse

The Role of a High School Nurse

The role of nursing is dynamic in different settings, but one of the most interesting role of a nurse is high school nursing. This is because the nurse is expected to play roles that transcends nursing career to include parenting and teaching at the same time (Nies & McEwen, 2019). High school nurses are tasked with providing health care needs of adolescents who are at a critical stage of their growth.  The primary goal of high school nurses should be to help students attain their educational and social goals in a complex environment. The nurse is expected to provide primary treatment, accommodate special needs, communicate with other multidisciplinary team, and create a health environment. The adolescent population served by high school nurses is considered a vulnerable population because apart from the few that comes with pre-existing special needs, the entire population is prone to increased risks including teen pregnancies, substance abuse, physical and mental illness, peer pressure, and others. This study will explore the role of nursing in high school set up.

Community Setting

The proposed community for nursing role is high school students. High school students have ages ranging from 14 to 18 years. This is an adolescent population that has a number of vulnerabilities that require nursing care. Adolescents are in a higher risk of long-term challenges in their major areas of life, including failure at school, incarceration poverty, physical and emotional abuse, physical or mental illnesses, eating disorders, teenage pregnancies, and many others which require close medical attention (Smith, 2017). In addition, most of them are still discovering the changes taking place in their body and they do not have skills and knowledge to deal with the changes.
