Transport Planning and Sustainability

  • Introduction

The planning profession is undergoing major challenges in effort to tackle the emerging social problems. The changes in the society pose major challenges to planning. Different authors have delved into the challenge of contemporary planning in responding to the emergent planning challenges. In their work, Rittel and Webber (1973) identified the emerging dilemmas in a general theory of planning and decades later, the planning profession is witnessing a multiplicity of these challenges rather than emergent of solutions. The authors identified the nature of wicked problems as a major challenge facing the general theory of planning. While the authors’ leaned on policy perspective, this has implication on overall planning especially in a dynamic world where new challenges emerge on continuous basis. Recognizing the same challenge, Peck (2005) asserts that architects are faced with multiplicity of dynamic challenges that require a high level of creativity.  A larger body of research has focused on the challenges of modernity to contemporary planning, and they all agree that planning must be realigned to provide solutions for the emerging social, political, and economic problems (Gleeson, 2000; Bohl, 2000).  One of the emerging challenges in planning is the call for sustainability. The world is moving towards sustainability and the planning profession cannot be left in the drive towards sustainability. Sustainability is proposed as the ultimate planning solution to manage emerging urban challenges like transport. This study looks into the different ways in which sustainability can be integrated into transport systems.
