  • I very impressed to be with you today, after many researches being conducted on technology and urban mobility it is clear that new technologies have been incredibly introduced in the transport sector. Therefore, I am here today to review new technologies in terms of facilitating improved urban mobility in Melbourne. Additionally, I will recommend some policy options that can be implemented to manage and regulate the introduction of transport technologies over the next 10 years.
  • The transport sector has experienced disruptive technologies that have revolutionized urban mobility. Some of these technologies include; car sharing, autonomous vehicles, electric cars, GPS connected public bikes, and solar powered or battery operated cars that are automatic driven among others.
  • These new technologies among many more developments in the transport sector have posed a threat to regulators

Assignment 2—The Major Essay and short seminar presentation

Value: 70% of final course assessment

(The weighting for the assignment components is 75% for the essay and 25% for the individual seminar)

 

Submission: Please submit your essay through Learnonline which can be accessed via the course web home page.  Please make sure that you have your name, course name and assignment number on every page header of your essay and slide presentation.  The number of the essay question you are answering must be indicated on the first page of your essay.  Your essay should have a title related to the essay question that you choose to answer.  Your file must be a Microsoft Word document.  Your Powerpoint slide/s for your individual seminar presentation must be uploaded to the Learnonline portal.  Your individual seminar presentation should be no more than 10 minutes in duration and have at least one supporting Powerpoint slide identified with your name, chosen question and essay title. The individual seminar component will allow you to highlight the key findings and conclusions in your essay.

Discuss the nature of the carbon emissions problem facing a local government or metropolitan area of your choice, and investigate transport policy actions in the short (i.e. 1-2 years), medium (3-8 years) and long term (9 or more years) that have the potential to achieve zero emissions mobility in that city. What are the current deficiencies of public transport provisioning for a local government or metropolitan area of your choice, and what transport policy reforms would you recommend that would improve the quality and quantity of public transport services, and increase the modal share of public transport to 30% of all trips over the next 10 years?

 

Question 3-Sustainable and Healthy Urban Mobility-Walking

Critically review current policy in a local government or metropolitan area of your choice for facilitating walking as a preferred mode of transport for trips of less than 1km.  What transport policies would you recommend to increase the modal share of walking to 35% of local trips (less than 1km) over the next 10 years?

 

Question 4-Sustainable and Healthy Urban Mobility-Cycling

Critically review current policy in a local government or metropolitan area of your choice for facilitating cycling as a dominant mode of transport for trips in the range of 1-5km.  What transport policies would you recommend to increase the modal share of walking to 35% of local trips (1-5km) over the next 10 years?. Question 5-Technology and Urban Mobility

Review the role of a new transport technology or technologies in terms of facilitating improved urban mobility in a local government or metropolitan area of your choice.  What policy options would you recommend to manage and regulate the introduction of transport technology/technologies over the next 10 years?

 

Question 6-Equity in Urban Mobility

Review the issues associated with ensuring social equity in the provisioning of transport services in a local government or metropolitan area of your choice.  What are the essential measures of providing equitable access to transport services.  Critically examine the policy options to provide people with better quality, more affordable and effective transport services.  What policies and transport services would you recommend to achieve improved social equity in urban public transport?

 

Question 7-Financing Investment in Urban Mobility

Review policy options for the financing of major elements of new transport infrastructure for a  local government or metropolitan area for one of the following transport infrastructure investments: (1) the provision of main roads; (2) mass transit systems (e.g. heavy commuter rail systems, light rail systems, metropolitan subways); (3) ports; (4) airports; (5) road freight handling facilities; or (6) rail freight services.

Your essay should provide recommendation/s on the preferred financing model for the type of transport infrastructure investment that you have chosen.

 

Question 8-Freight Transport

Review issues surrounding the transport of freight in urban areas in a local government or metropolitan area of your choice.  Evaluate the current policy approaches to managing these issues.  Develop new policies to accommodate freight traffic over the next 10 years. 

 

Question 9-Regional Transport

Review the transport issues affecting a particular regional area in Australia.  Develop a range of transport policy options that could be applied to solve and manage these issues with a maximum implementation time span of 10 years.

 

Question 10-Transport Futures

For a mode of your choice, and for a local government or metropolitan area of your choice, discuss the current issues of interest to transport policy-makers, and discuss the transport future that you would recommend over the longer term.  What policies (and actions) would be needed to achieve your envisaged transport future?
